On June 17, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation of Japan announced that it has developed a lightweight/rigid Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) with high heat resistance. The resin based on phenolic resin has high heat resistance, and its physical properties do not degrade even at 300°C.
CFRP, which is both lightweight and strong, is expected to be increasingly used in mobile transportation and industrial machinery applications in the pursuit of weight loss and production efficiency. However, CFRP based on common epoxy resins has problems with heat resistance and cannot fully meet the diverse needs of customers.
The thermal resistance of CFRP based on Mitsubishi Chemical epoxy resin is 100 ~ 200℃, while the new product developed with phenolic resin as the base material has high thermal resistance, and its physical properties will not decrease even at 300℃.
According to Mitsubishi Chemical, in addition to its high thermal conductivity, high rigidity and lightweight features, CFRP has also been successfully given high heat resistance, which is expected to help solve previously difficult problems for customers. Now some customers have decided to try it out, and the future will further promote the application of the material in aircraft, automobile, rail transit, industrial and other fields.
