Introduction to Phlogopite Mica Tape

Phlogopite Mica Tape is the most widely used insulation material in the field of fire-resistant wires and cables. It is a composite material primarily composed of phlogopite mica paper, bonded with reinforcement materials using high-temperature adhesives.

1. Core Structure

Phlogopite mica tape typically exhibits a characteristic golden-brown or deep bronze color. Its typical structure includes:
Base Material: High-quality phlogopite mica paper (made from natural phlogopite ore).
Reinforcement Material: Usually alkali-free glass fiber cloth (to increase tensile strength) or polyester film (to enhance flexibility).
Adhesive: High-performance silicone resin, used to maintain the integrity of the mica layer under extreme temperatures.

2. Key Characteristics

Superior Fire Resistance: Its temperature limit typically ranges from 750°C to 950°C. During a fire, even if the organic binder carbonizes, the mica remains tightly wrapped around the conductor, providing reliable electrical insulation to prevent short circuits.
Excellent Electrical Performance: It maintains high volume resistivity and breakdown voltage resistance even in high-temperature environments.
Flexibility & Mechanical Strength: When reinforced with glass cloth, the tape possesses high tensile strength, making it suitable for high-speed wrapping machines to wrap tightly around cable cores without breaking.

3. Main Classifications

Single-sided Tape: Glass cloth on one side and mica paper on the other. This is the most common and cost-effective type.
Double-sided Tape: Mica paper sandwiched between two layers of glass cloth or film, offering higher mechanical strength and better protection.
Three-in-one Tape: Consists of two layers of glass cloth with a layer of mica paper in the middle, providing the most superior performance.

4. Typical Applications

Fire-resistant Cables: Widely used in high-rise buildings, subways, underground malls, power stations, and fire safety projects. It ensures that critical facilities like fire pumps, smoke exhaust fans, and emergency lighting remain powered for 90–180 minutes during a fire.
Aerospace & Military: Used in special wire harnesses that require extreme temperature resistance and high reliability.
